What I ate in BUDAPEST | A Food Journal

Budapest, the queen of the Danube, is one of the most captivating and historical cities in Europe. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 is considered to have an outstanding universal value, as a center for receiving and disseminating cultural influences.

Today, Budapest is the capital city of Hungary and the most populated city in the country, as well as being the second largest city along the Danube River. It is considered an outstanding example of urban development in Central Europe.

Hungary’s location

Budapest also has a great dining scene- with a blend of classic and traditional dishes, sophisticated dining, international flavors, and casual local eateries.

During my short stay in Budapest, I decided on a couple of classic and historical restaurants, and then ate many other fun dishes. Café Gerbeaud and Gundnel Restaurants are part of the iconic Budapest dining scene, and would I recommend them to anyone who visits the city.

Greetings from Gundel Restaurant in Budapest!

I tried several traditional dishes including Hungarian fish soup and Dobos cake, as well as dipping into International and modern foods like shawarma and American-style donuts. I cruised down the Danube with sparkling wine in hand, and paired a Hungarian pinot noir with filet and foie gras.

I know I just scratched the surface of Budapest’s classic and modern dining scene. However, I feel that by experiencing the city’s two oldest eating establishment, I am creating a type of foundation into Budapest’s world of dining.

I have also included a couple of sweet dishes from my day trip to Old Town Szentendre!

  1. […] You can actually see where the ice cream ends and where the whipped cream starts. This was not the first time I was given more cheap whipped cream than dessert and it makes me laugh just thinking of it. I had a similar instance in Budapest, all whipped cream → What I ate in HUNGARY – A Food Journal […]
