Garden of the Gods | Exploring Colorado

Colorado Springs, Colorado– Garden of the Gods is a majestic red rock public park just 70 miles south of Denver, and is free to the public. There are magnificent geological formations in various shades of red, pink, and white that you can casually stroll through, cycle or take a trolley tour to view this wonderous park. It is a great place for all generations and fitness levels, and should not be missed if visiting the Denver area.

As mentioned, Garden of the Gods is free to the public unlike the American National Parks. This area used to be privately owned by a gentleman named, Charles Elliott Perkins, who was the head of the Burlington Railroad.

He built a summer home in Garden of the Gods in 1879, and had opened this red rock wonderland for the public to enjoy. Perkins passed away in 1907, and in 1909 his children conveyed four-hundred eighty acres to the City of Colorado Springs for the use of a public park. Perkin’s children knew how their father felt about his property, and wanted it to be continuously enjoyed by public.

This enjoyable and inspiring park would be known forever as the Garden of the Gods “where it shall remain free to the public, where no intoxicating liquors shall be manufactured, sold, or dispensed, where no building or structure shall be erected except those necessary to properly care for, protect, and maintain the area as a public park.”

Garden of the Gods was a very memorable experience for us while road tripping through Colorado. Walking along the green gardens of craggy peaks in various shades of reds, pinks and whites was both breathtaking and impressive. This was truly a Garden of the Gods!
