The Mosque of Ibn Tulun | A UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Mosque of Ibn Tulun is a must see for those who are visiting Egypt. It is considered the oldest mosque in Egypt, as well as all of Africa; and it was built between AD 876 and 879, by Ahmed Ibn Tulun.

Over the centuries it had miraculously survived, and kept its original form. This mosque is also the largest in Cairo when it comes to area of land, and is constructed around a beautiful courtyard.

In 1979, Historic Cairo which includes the Mosque of Ibn Tulun was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historic Cairo which may also be called, “Old Islamic Cairo” or just “Islamic Cairo” has great significant value when it comes to world culture. This region of Cairo alone has 600+ classified monuments that are of historical interest.

When entering a mosque, it is customary to remove your shoes to preserve the cleanliness of the prayer space. In this case at the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, we had cloth covers placed over our shoes.

The Mosque of Ibn Tulun is a very significant site as well as being photogenic. Since the mosque was large and built around a courtyard, the bright natural sunlight and shadows were magnificent. This was my favorite mosque that I visited while in Egypt, it was stunning!

  1. Hey Trixie, what a great post 🙂 can’t wait to visit Cairo and discover these treasures 🙂 when did you went there? Was it during the pandemic? I ask this because it is kind of empty… Stay safe and greetings from Portugal, PedroL

    1. Hi Pedro, Thank you so much! I went in October of 2019, months before the shutdown. It was pretty empty, it may have been the time I went. My guide new the correct timing of when to go, I believe. I had gone to other mosques that day and it was not too bad since we started early in the morning. Egypt is open which is great and I have heard of travelers going there now. I definitely want to explore more of Egypt, it is an incredible country. Have a great day! Trixie 👩🏻
