As my sun sign is in Capricorn, an earth sign, I enjoy anything with a grounding nature. That is why I have a deep fondness for mountains, forests, vegetable dishes and gardens. One of my favorite things to do while traveling is visit a garden, if my schedule permits. This might have to do with me being an Earth sign, but it could also do with me looking for inspiration. As I do live in a desert, walking through this botanical garden gave me a lot of inspiration.
I came in during social distancing days and purchasing my ticket online was mandatory. I had purchased it a few days prior with a pre-scheduled enterance time for both the gardens and butterfly house. It made scheduling my day a lot easier and I still had time for a leisurely lunch at Gertrude’s.
There is a lot to see at the Desert Botanical Gardens besides cactus! There are different easy walking loops that are 1/4 to a 1/3 of a mile long. The ‘Desert Discovery Loop Trail’ is the first one that you will come across after the main enterance. There is also the ‘Sonoran Desert Nature Loop Trail’ and the ‘Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Loop Trail’. The gardens are a great place to educate yourself about the various plants that survive in the desert landscape. It was also a serene environment to wander and relax for an afternoon.
The Marshall Butterfly Pavilion is also located inside the Desert Botanical Gardens. Although the pavilion was a small butterfly house, it was still pleasurable to walk amongst a variety of beautiful butterflies. It was great to see many generations enjoy this sweet indoor butterfly garden.
Spending a day at the Botanical Gardens is not complete without dining at Gertrude’s. I admitted in my Gertrude blog that I enjoyed my lunch there more than the gardens itself, but then again I am food focused. Their modern take on Southwestern cuisine was excellent and their cocktails are terrific. It is a perfect way to begin or complete your visit to the Desert Botanical Gardens.
